Chandler was founded in 1912 and incorporated in 1920. In the late1800s, Alexander Chandler, a veterinarian, settled in the area. Chandler studied the Native American canal system and developed an irrigation system using water from ground resources and the Salt River to change the desert landscape into fertile farm land. The original town site started with 18,000 acres of land acquired by Dr. Chandler and today the city covers about 63 square miles. The town has grown from that small ranch and farm community in to a city that over 243,000 residents call home. Chandler Arizona is still attracting many new residents with its growing computer and communication industries.
